Charles Berlitz of the Berlitz Schools of language tells of going out to Sumatra one occasion with an oilman who had studied Indonesian with them in New York. The man had bought a house outside of Palembang and Berlitz had urged him to plunge right in with the language. The first call the pupil took at the office turned out to be from one of his newly hired servants.

I have not yet seen any of the television clips of the President's media blitz on five networks trying to sell his approach to health-care reform. There is great concern these days about health care costs. We are spending 18% of our income on it. The Fed Chairman has noted this week another concern. Is the recession over. He said likely, but it won't feel like it for some time to come what with 9.6 % unemployed. I want to ask, "Is there light at the end of the turmoil?"
